Very good pizza. A different taste of the crust it's thin but chewy. The brick oven gives it a very nice taste.

This is the first place yelpers have sent me to where I have honestly felt like people on here were f-ing with me. Seriously a five star? For this? We got there at around 6:30 on a Monday for their only nighttime buffet. The place was a ghost town. It was us and one family of parents, grandparents and obligatory unruly small child no one could control. We picked a seat and a few minutes later a *waitress* moseyed in and asked us what we wanted to drink. Drinks were plopped on the table without a word and there we were left. No music, no TVs. Nada. You feel like your voice echoes... The salad bar was tastier than it looked. Odd to have no Italian dressing at a pizza place but I prefer balsamic at any rate so I was happy. Ok start, not jumping through hoops but decent. Then came the pizza. They had precooked about 12-15 pies, all were pretty stone cold, cardboard-y. We took our bites and almost started to laugh. "What is the rating here again" my husband inquired. I mean it was bad, so freaking bad, worse than Cicis. We were starved though and I told my husband that he could request something. He did but it took a minute to actually ever get anything. At some point I said something about maybe getting a margarita pizza made to our waitress who was strolling by. She pointed at the warmer and said there is one. I said ummm its not hot, its really old. She shrugged and said something about it being dead in there and so that was what was there. Ok I get that. I am a paying customer though and it is not my fault your restaurant made 15 pizzas a long time ago that no one ate. I should not have to settle for them. I think I was overheard because a couple minutes later she was sullenly taking the old pizzas off the tables and suddenly new pizzas started to slowly make their way to replace them. I should not have had to say anything. If I hadn't they would have just had us eat crap. The hot stuff we had at the very end was promising, not 5 star by any stretch but solidly pretty good pizza. It was too late for me, I was just kinda disgusted by the general attitude and lack of care here. It was sad. I wasted money in gas and got shit. I guess you need to come here at peak hours or or be prepared to accept cold old pizza, no pasta anywhere to be seen and dried out disgusting desserts.... Oh and James wanted me to add his requested pizza actually emerged pretty black, not just on the edges, it was just burnt.

Love the pizza and garlic bread here. I always get the Naples sampler with the spicy pepperoni on in.... The thin crust is perfect for my liking and I have to say that the garlic bread is my favorite. If your a garlic lover like I am this is definitely sometime you have to try. I've never had a bad experience here.

I had no idea I was eating here today, as I was at 12 & Halstead at WNIC , picking up a prize. I truly wish I had known there was one at 11 & Halsted [ lol as I drove to 14 & Middlebelt ] Anyways I ate her 2 times before , once in 2007 & 2008, but to be here during the 11- 2 pm buffet!!! I called & a sweet gal named LEA , gave me the details $8 Pizza Bar Salad Bar Dessert & Beverage They constantly had 10-12 pizza out & under the lights The Meat Lovers w/Ham -Bacon- Sausage & Pepperoni was very GOOD A+ As was the white pizza with spinach A+ The salad bar had the largest pieces of grilled chicken I have/had ever seen at a buffet WOW! And fresh julienne sliced Salami & a white cubed cheese , perhaps brick? Also the Ranch Dressing tasted home made I was insatiable trying to get enough. [ does anyone know if it is homemade? ] A+ Coke Products A+ Plus the nice young man that roved around & cleaned tables & excess plates A+ 'sweet' Lea and her great phone skills A+ I am so VERY Thankful that this place is 22 miles away....Really I am...

I'm giving 5 stars because I'm not a pizza lover and I really enjoyed the pizza here. So good. Crunchy flavorful and my 2 yr old actually ate it. :) We ordered the Salami and sausage on a classic style pizza. Really thought it was wonderful. I actually want more! :) I love thin pizza toss by hand. You can even see him making it through the window. It was kinda empty when we went at noon but good thing because my kid is loud.

I cannot remember the last time I actually left a restaurant... It was about 4:45...5 p.m. and we stopped in to eat in the dining area. Walked in (no greeting, just a bunch of people milling around looking too busy for customers) BUT worse than that we were hit with the strong smell of bleach, turned my head to the left and there is someone in the dining area swashing a mop and scrubbing the floor. There is a huge puddle of water being swashed around and strong stench of bleach. They actually were going to seat us in there and when I said, no thank you, it really smells like cleaning dissolvent, the girl mopping said "what, you can smell something?" My husband and I just looked at each other and laughed. REALLY!! Yeah, you're cleaning the floor and not a small area, the WHOLE side that the waitress was going to sit us in. YUM, that is appetizing. So, we left. The waitress was apologetic and offered to make us a pie to take home (hmm if I wanted take out, I would have went for that) The smell of the cleaning chemicals quenched my appetite and the idea that someone is scrubbing the floor during dining time...no thank you Sorry, don't think I will give this location a go.

I've never been to New Haven, but the Food Network did a special on the competition between Pepe's and Sally's and it peaked my interest. Knowing Tomatoes models itself after New Haven style pizza, it's been on my mind for a while. Also, because this place is about 5 minutes from my office, I remember people ordering it and bringing it back where I would sit in torture smelling all of the garlic and spices. Time to finally get up and go there. The pizza buffet is fantastic. There are about 15 different pies just sitting there waiting for you to try. The buffet also has garlic bread, a pasta dish and a salad bar. Add in a drink and you get everything for $6.99!! I can't even tell you which pizza is better because I sampled about 5 different kinds and they all rocked. All of their toppings were noticably fresh and the crust was thin with a blend of both crispy and soft. The sauce was wonderfully spiced and had that perfect consistency of not too pasty and not too soupy. Even the white pizza was awesome. One star taken away because the sides (garlic bread, pasta) weren't so hot. The bread tasted as if it had been sitting there since 1984 and the pasta was so overly garlicky, I could have fended off a nest of vampires by blowing at them. Reading previous reviews, it seems the weakest area at Tomatoes is the service. Perhaps understaffed? Anyway, go for the buffet and you won't be disappointed.

One of the best pizzas in the country? I can't argue. Pizza is such a personal thing. It starts when you're just a kid. It's that place your family takes you that starts to feel like home. If you want to get a conversation started, just ask someone about their favorite pizza. If I'd been a kid in Farmington Hills, Michigan this might be my favorite pizza. The crust is thin, but not Saltines thin. Sauce is plentiful and tasty with a hit of spice. Cheese, gooey but not gummy. The toppings were terrific. It's classic in the best ways. The crust is crispy but chewy and still has a lot of flavor, there's a nice char...enough to keep it interesting but not burnt-tasting. Our server was fabulous. We started with a group of six after girl's soccer and within moments ballooned to 17(apparently my description of the place lured the rest of the crowd). And the single server, albeit with an uncomfortable looking lip piercing, never missed a beat. She was funny, accommodating, delightful and amazingly prompt and attentive. If I had to complain about something it would be the ambience. It's plain, but it's fine. And, honestly, it's a pizza place. You don't come for ambience. So, amazing pizza and fabulous service. Maybe I'll have to rethink this "favorite pizza" idea for myself...

At the lunch buffet, pizza is good, all thin crust, good variety. Salad is good, made with 100% romaine lettuce. But recently they raised their price to $9 for the lunch buffet, so they are now off of our work lunch group list. Too bad, we sometimes would have 10 people come out from Southfield for our once a week lunch outing. $9 for a pizza lunch buffet is just too much for me.

  • James Y.

This is the kind of pizza I dream about at night. While I am more of a deep dish pizza fan, the chewy/crunchy crust and fresh vibrant flavours are really unlike anything I've experienced in Michigan. The service is great (at this location anyways) and they get the order done quick.

We've been going here for years and it is "As good as it gets!" So's the one on 14 and Middlebelt which I think as a wood-fired oven. The pizza is fantastic. Less is more. We like the simple pizzas. Green - spinach, garlic, mozz White - mozz, fresh tomato, basil & garlic Perfect crust; perfect pizza. The only pizza I like as much as this is Luzzo's in NYC who has a coal oven. They also have a lunch buffet which is the deal of the century at $6.99. You can try different pizzas and I've always been asked if there was anything I wanted made for the buffet.

I really like their pizza buffet. I love the Nutella filled bread! They are the best!

  • Kara D.

YUM! This is some of my favorite metro-Detroit pizza, and you can't beat the lunch buffet. The only reason why I give it four out of five is that the crust goes limp/soggy very quickly, which makes it difficult for carry-out.

  • Jiah C.

Just absolutely the best pizza joint ever. Paper thin crust and crispy, their tomato sauce is to die for (and I'm a SAUCE FREAK). Ingredients are fresh and impeccable, they put whole slices of applewood smoked bacon on their pizzas... that's how bacon should be used. Also, if you're a garlic lover - the extra garlic as a topping blows me away. When I'm done eating, blows everyone else away too, literally. Just yum yum yum!

  • Christina K.

I've been here twice and it gets better and better! We ordered the garlic breadsticks and boy were they garlicky!!! I kinda had to pick some of it off or any vampire would've dropped dead within a mile radius!! We ordered the small (but it's still huge) red sauce pizza with pepperoni and onion. The pepperoni is fresh and spicy so a must try for first timers!! And the second time we got the small classic with mushroom and onions. The crust is super thin and crispy and it's a little burnt from the brick oven which is the best! They also have a salad bar that's really fresh too!

The $9 pizza buffet must be one of Detroit's great steals. $9 will get you access to an endless array of possibilities at the pizza bar and the salad bar. But mostly at the pizza bar. It also features access to bread, pasta, and drinks at the fountain. The pizzas are small, the slices that much more so. But that's a good thing. I got to sample a whole bunch of pizzas: Classic (red sauce and mozzarella), Red (red sauce and pecorino romano), White (Mozzarella, Tomato, Garlic & Basil), and Meat Lover's. I really enjoyed the thin crust. Each of these slices were excellent, though my preference went towards the Meat Lover's and Classic. It is easy to go nuts with this deal. One could probably eat well into the double-digits in terms of slices. This place is good, really good. I do wish though that I tried the crab. Alas, that'll be next time. Though I still can't believe the nine-bucks thing!

I've dined in and carried out, either way the pizza is spectacular. There isn't really any waiters if you dine in, the kitchen staff waits on you but they are always very friendly and helpful. Salad bar and fountain drink station allow you to pick what you want to eat/drink, both are adequate. Now onto the pizza; this is apizza style pies, originally found in New Haven, CT but perfected in Farmington, the crust is thin and crispy, sometimes charred a bit but nothing to complain about. You won't find tons of toppings to choose from but the ones they have are done to perfection. The Green Pizza is topped with spinach, garlic, cheese and oil but is probably their best pie. White Pizza is a close second, tomatoes, basil, garlic, oil and cheese; sometimes I like to subtract the tomatoes and add pepperoni. The pepperoni is hand cut which sometimes results in "odd" shapes but is so good it doesn't matter, plus the home made feel is a plus. The Red Pizza is the first pie on this list that has sauce on it and is good but some form of the Green and White is preferred. Sides are good (cheese bread, chocolate piadina) and this pizza joint in the corner of a strip mall is a must try for pizza lovers.

This is from memory of several visits. Another Yelper pal asked me if I had ever been to Tomatoes Apizzaand It sparked a memory from my past. Its been at least several years since I went there. The main thing I recall is the Artisanal pizza with expensive prices. However I do know many people who cannot or will not eat any of the traditional Pizza chains around and Tomaotes Apizza is just up their alley. They have some mighty fine pies. Many worth noting including an old world classic Thin crust Margherita pizza with only the bare essentials - red tomato sauce, fresh basil, fresh mozzarella. For those who forgo the tried and true tradition of tomato sauce they offer a White Pizza that I'm told is the epitomy of flavor... I've never ventured to try it, as I have a standard - for me Pizza needs at least a few standard items - Tomato Sauce, at least Mozzarella and possibly Parmesan as well, and some sort of topping - Mushrooms and maybe Pepperoni. I prefer Thin Crust - something with cracker crunch or perhaps a hand tossed chewy crust. I will be the last person to get a honky pizza with 12 different items on it - thats not even pizza in my book. But Hey too each their Own. I wanted to write more, but frankly all I remember about Tomatoes is 1) they offer some out of the ordinary Pizzas and 2) the prices are high. Paying $20 for 1 pie is not out of the question for Tomatoes. However for me $20 should be getting me more than just A pizza. I will have to venture another trip there again someday. Tomatoes Apizza is one place that deserves several trips for the discerning taste.

This is the best pizza in all of Michigan. That being said, you have to be a fan of thin crust, brick oven, homemade pizza. If you say you like pizza and enjoy Buddy's, Domino's, Shields and the mighty Caesar's you will probably not enjoy Tomatoes. Tomatoes Apizza ishand shaped, perfected in a brick oven which may or may not burn the crust. The sauce is rich tomato and garlic, with hand cut pepperoni has a spice that leaves you wanting, "just one more" slice. A five dollar pizza will fill you up and out, but Tomatoes will send you to Italy!

Staying at the Sheraton on Haggarty and had room svc the past three nights, so I decided to order a local pizza. Stumbled across Tomatoes Apizza on Yelp and this place RULES! The pizza arived Hot and I had to wait for it to cool. It was thin crust and cooked perfectly with hints of golden/ brown cheese. I ordered a small and finished the entire pizza. I am from Chicago and feel we have good pizza there but this was amazing. You definitely need to go here. JSW, Chicago, 10/23/13

How much anticipation can someone handle? All these five star reviews for a restaurant, this place must be good, and it's close. I wasn't dissapointed. Saturday evening all by myself, what to eat. Lightbulb!!! Tomatoes tonight. When I went to Italy a few months back the business person I traveled with and I tried an auhentic italian pie. He said that this was proabably the best pizza he had eaten and I agreed. Guess what. We have that same great pizza here in Michigan. How lucky we are. I had a small cheese, pepperoni, sausage, and garlic pizza. This small is enough to feed two or three people who happen to be on a diet and need to have a slice or two. As everyone else describes the pizza it is a thin crust, advantage, you can pick it up and eat it with your hands without losing any toppings. The pepperoni wasn't too spicey, it was goood. There could have been a little more cheese on top, but it was adequate. Oh, and the garlic, awesome! It is still coming out of my pores a day and a half later. It's so bad(but good) that my dogs won't even come near me. The only drawback to the place on this visit, my first, was that the restaurant was messy. The service was only decent on this trip. My drink expired and I had to ask for more. There were several tables that hadn't been cleaned off the whole time I was there. I was toying with dropping this down a star for that reason alone.

My husband and I have high standards for pizza and are looking in the NW section of metro Detroit for something comparable to what we had at the bottom of the Spanish Steps in Rome. We followed the reviews and checked out Tomatoes Apizza on Halsted. The decor is substandard. The salad bar packed a big punch for such a small offering. Bleu cheese crumbles, salami, chopped romaine were very fresh however the three dressings were unlabeled and thin. The large pizza is huge and oval. It's sliced in approx. 3" x 10" slices and it's soggy! You kinda have to support it to prevent the toppings from sliding off. We upgraded to Buffalo mozzarella and could barely find any under the enormous amount of fresh basil. Now I like basil but too much tastes like licorice. The pizza was simply too wet and unappetizing. Did I say soggy and chewy? Skip this place. No beer or wine either. The hunt continues...

Okay, there are so many things I liked here about the pizza. Its crust is thin, and when you have a good recipe for dough you don't need a lot of it. It allows your tongue to taste the toppings simultaneously. So immediately I tasted: Hand cut spicy pepperoni Thin, tangy slices of white onion Fresh, milky, roundish, blobs of mozzarella Sardines!! I was saving sardines for last you know. It is an acquired taste but soo worth it. It was salty, a bit meaty and oily. Smells like fish. Oh, it was great. They used a gorgeous filet of sardine. Oh yeah... filets of fish at a time. Pizza that can't be wolfed down like an androgynous cheese breaded taste of a pizza slice is the real thing. Yeah there's a bit of brown-to-dark brown on the bottom of your pie. Its oven baked and unique as a piece of art!

Excellent pizza and salad. We go there regularly (every 3-4 weeks) for the lunch buffet. Be advised that the place is full some Fridays - don't show up late!

This could easily be two reviews. Tomatoes as a buffet and Tomatoes as stand alone pizza. As a lunch buffet it should get eleventy billion stars. Tomatoes renders Cici's asunder with such a violent curb stomping that it can be measured on seismographic equipment two states away. As a stand alone a la carte pizza not bad, good even, but top 25 pies in the nation? Where the chefs eat? Get the fuck outa here. What I liked and didn't like about the pizza: Liked- Fresh garlic as a topping. So much win. Back in Mass when I lived there this was an option at every pizza joint no matter how big or small and it's a no brainer. Whole strips of bacon as a topping. Mmmmm bacon. Decent amount of and very fresh quality in the toppings. Nice to mix it up with a good thin crust pie now and then. Disliked- Despite the quality of the toppings one variety of pizza tasted a lot like every other variety of pizza. Toppings sliced too thin perhaps? Even the white pizza didn't taste much different. Very odd for that to be the case with thin crust pizza where usually the toppings are more pronounced. Not enough sauce and not enough zip on what sauce there was on each slice. The thin crust. I liked it when it was cooked OK but way too often, like every other slice, the super thin crust would bubble up with air pockets then cook to a cracker crisp consistency which when you would try to take a bite the remaining 3-4 bites of a slice would just shatter and rain down on the plate. Think Han Solo in Carbonite dropped a good ten feet onto cement kind of shattering. One time in particular after eating 4 slices I had a mound of shattered pizza on my plate and it looked like I had ordered some brand new funky dish called pizza nachos or something. All in all not bad pizza but for the price it most certainly does not live up to the hype for me. Stick to the buffet and you will come away happy.

Alright, let me start off by saying this: I am by no means a pizza connoisseur. I am perfectly content to scarf down a $5 Hot-N-Ready with my man, and have never had any serious issues with Domino's (even- gasp! before they made changes!) If you can get past these facts and still take my opinion seriously, then read on, fellow Yelpers. Read on... In anticipation of the delicious pizza eating experience I was expecting based on the overwhelmingly positive response I've noticed on Yelp, I decided to do the ol' starve-myself-all-day-so-I-can-stuff-myself-at-dinner routine. I was salivating from the moment I walked into this place, as the smell of the brick oven crisping up some pizza crust immediately hit me. We (my boyfriend and I) were seated, and we promptly began scouring the menu in order to decide what we would feast upon. We decided to get a large pizza that was a mixture of four different kinds, so that we could really sample what this famous metro-Detroit establishment had to offer. We placed our order around 6:30pm, and my first impression was that our waiter was fairly competent, and I expected that our pizza would arrive within 20 minutes or so. How very, very wrong was I. The first big blow came when a family, who arrived about 15 minutes after us, received a pizza about 10 minutes after they ordered it. Meanwhile, my boyfriend and I (who are reluctant to speak up and prefer to bottle it inside) stewed as we watched them happily dig into what seemed to be a large pepperoni pizza. My hungry-to-the-point of sweating self knew that something wasn't right, and gave my boyfriend the go-ahead to approach the waiter about the hold-up. When the waiter was flagged down and questioned, he told us he would go check on it, but it shouldn't be too much longer. Meanwhile, my glass of coke sat empty, as I stared longingly at it and began to pick at the ice for some sustenance. In frustration, my boyfriend actually got up and filled his drink himself (which for a shy gal like me, was cringe-inducing). About twenty minutes later, we encountered our final straw- the family next to us were delivered a second pizza! We hastily asked what the hold up was, and the waiter apologetically told us that the wrong pizza had been made, and that a new pizza would be ready in about 10 minutes. Shaking with anger, we waited. One hour later, a huge pizza was delivered to our table. The crust had crispy air bubbles that make me tremble with glee, and the toppings looked fresh and cooked to perfection. I temporarily put aside my anger, and dug in. I began with the pepperoni, and I must say, it was likely the winner of the evening. It was clear that the pepperoni was high quality, and I loved the way the edges were crisped up, yet it retained a perfect amount of saltiness and moisture. However, as I moved on to the other flavors, the flavors that pizza snobs likely rejoice over because of the "complex, fresh flavors", I came to the realization that thin-crust pizza is really not my thing. I love my pizza loaded with chunky pizza sauce and gooey cheese, and the sparse amounts of sauce (if there at all) and cheese that are associated with thin-crust pizza just don't do it for me. I can appreciate that the basil adds a fresh bite to counteract the creaminess of the grass-fed buffalo mozzarella, but I just don't have a discriminating enough palate for my taste buds to truly care. As you can likely guess, I was truly disappointed in my experience with Tomatoes Apizza. And no, my fellow food-loving comrades, I did not get a discount on my bill from the horribly long wait. Next time I go out for pizza, I will surely be headed to the pizza place that holds a special, cheesy cranny in my heart, and that place is Buddy's.

I'd heard about a place on the other side of town which made New Haven style pizza. I didn't know this, but apparently New Haven was some kind of pizza mecca. Well, apparently it is. What's really depressing about this fact is that my parents lived in New Haven for three years. Those times I came to visit, I could have been getting my fill. Ah, well... A friend of mine insists that the best pizza anywhere is found in strip malls. An economist blogger whom I like to read expands this thought to ethnic foods generally. If you want the good stuff, look for something with low overhead. Ideally a strip mall far from any tourist trap or business district, where the only thing bringing people to the door is the food. This is generally very good advice which has worked pretty well for me. I note that Tomatoes Apizza has two locations, both in out-of-the-way strip malls. And it is delicious! It's thin crust, just barely crispy. The sauce is about perfect, sweet without being cloying. The toppings were generous. I got the pepperoni and Italian sausage, because that's what I always get. But it all worked together. And the small was more than enough for this one person. That's the up-side. The downside was that the server was nice but he was the only person working and consequently wasn't as attentive as you might like. The other downside: I think I prefer more crust than that. I'm just not a thin crust person. If I'm going to blow my program for pizza, I think I want more starch than that. That's not a knock on Tomatoes, which seems to be a fine example of the genre. Just my personal taste. Overall, I give the place four stars. If I lived anywhere near theplace, I could see the family visiting the place often. But since we live all the way across town, it'll probably be a rare treat. And maybe that's as it should be.

One of the best pies I've ever had in my life. Unlike other pizza buffets the stock of food is kept fresh with new (and interesting!) pizzas coming out very quickly. The staff is friendly and great to deal with!

This was my second time dining here and it was as tasty as the first. The white pizza is so tasty, as well as the cheesey bread and salad. We got two large pizzas to feed 6 of us, and I think we all took leftovers home. I would give this place 5 stars, because the food itself is outstanding, but I dock it one because the waitress was subpar. There were 7 women and two little girls at the table, and the waitress never picked up our salad bowls from the beginning of the meal, or our plates after we were done. She was not friendly at all! no smiles or anything. It was a Friday night, but the place was not very busy, so I'm not really sure what was up her dupka. The waiter from my first visit was very friendly and attentive.

Went to Tomatoes Apizza on a recommendation from a friend, and I must admit, the pizza is very good. It's a brick-oven thin-crust type pizza and the large is about 12"x18". It's not a crispy crust, but it's not floppy either. It's kinda in between. They have several different 'base' pizzas: Classic, White, Green (spinach), Crab (white w/ lemon), and buffalo mozzarella based. All of which can be 'doctored' with about a dozen other toppings including salami, cherry peppers, and basil. They have a lunch buffet that I wish I was closer to at lunch. They also have a small salad bar with romaine lettuce and things like blue cheese, chickpeas, and a pretty good house balsamic viniagrette. they also have a dessert Pidadini that is unique and very tasty. It's basically a chocolate, hazelnut calzone. Definitely worth trying. And to top it all off, the waitress who was there was a riot. I like fun, irreverent staffs, and she was definitely that.

I would probably think this place was just your standard pizza place driving by. Thanks to reading the other reviews on here I decided to stop in and try it out. The pizza was amazing. I love thin crust and this was thin and crispy. Even after sitting there for a while it was still crispy. The flavor was very good and you can tell all the ingredients are super fresh. I was bummed we had just missed the buffet (11-2 Mon-Fri). Our waitress was very nice and friendly. If I lived closer to this place it would be my new go to spot.

Their white pizza with fresh basil is wonderful. Add a salad to go and you have ample dinner and leftovers. I have only eat in once and it was not enjoyable. The seats were hard and uncomfortable and the ambiance is lacking. Best to take it home. I agree that the staff do not make it their business to talk up the pizza. It seems they feel you should know what you want, order it and be on your way.

"This crust is thinner than an anorexic model." That's what I thought as the waitress brought our pizza to the table. We ordered a half buffalo mozzarella/half green (spinach) pizza. The spinach side was sprinkled with little fragrant garlic bits. The crust was cracker-thin and crispy at the edges. Everything was all quickly devoured. We also ordered the garlic bread, which is basically their pizza crust slathered with garlic pieces and butter (or oil, I couldn't tell). There is SO much garlic that Buffy wouldn't need a stake after eating an order of these. There isn't much ambience to the place (it is situated in a 1/2 strip mall). More importantly, they forgot about our salad (but to be fair, so did we...it wasn't until after we left and looked at the receipt). Pizza: 3.5 stars the Rest: 3 stars If I lived in the hood and driving to Supino's seemed too much of a chore, I'd probably get my 'Za on here. Carry out, of course.

This was the biggest, most wonderful pizza I've had in a really long time...perhaps ever! The service was efficient but left you alone, the pricing was fair, and the pizza comes out quickly and PIPING hot! Love this place! :) Oh, and to top it off, they have cans of FAYGO! Mmm mm!

The best pizza in metro Detroit, no question. My wife and I lived in Boston for 6 years and we were spoiled with great pizza places. When we moved to Detroit, we realized good pizza is hard to find. From the chain pizza places to the local pizza places, you typically get a thick, spongy crust loaded with soggy toppings. And if you ask for thin crust, you get a cracker style crust that doesn't have the 'chewyness' that good pizza should have. That's why Tomatoes is so great. It's a completely authentic, new york style pizza. You get a hand tossed dough that comes out thin, crispy and chewy at the same time. It's heaven. We typically get the Classic with pepperoni, which is sauce, cheese and pepperoni. Or we get the Fresh Mozzarella, which is sauce, basil and fresh mozzarella. I LOVE this pizza. At this location, the inside is plenty big but nothing special. They do have a decent salad bar, but the pizza is why you go to Tomatoes.

I first walked into Tomatoes Apizza several years ago and my server promised that if he couldn't make the best pizza I've ever had, he would cut off his pinky. To my knowledge, he still has all his fingers. Try to stop in during off-hours in the afternoon to talk to the staff and learn what separates this pie from the rest. They'll be happy to make a pizza any way you like, though first-timers should start with the sampler. Their lunch buffet is good but take home the real thing to experience all Tomatoes Apizza has to offer.

This is by far the best pizza in Michigan. I love this place. The pizza is so unique. The crust is crunchy yet chewy, the classic peperoni pizza is outstanding, the peperoni is a tiny bit spicy but ooh so good. They lowered the price on the lunch buffet to $9 bucks what a deal. I love Tomatoes APizza, it's the BEST!!

The service was really slow and response was worse. They weren't busy, just not in a hurry. The extra sauce for the spaghetti came after it was eaten.

Not a huge pizza fan but tomatoes is pretty serious. The pizza is really thin. I have only had the red pizza which is, red sauce, and parmasean. Simple but delicious. Highly recommended. Will be back to try their other options.

The best pizza I have ever had!!!!! Had the traditional pie with tomatoes, basil and red sauce simple and amazing.

I had nothing but a terrible experience from my past carryout. My green pizza was WAY to salty. I couldn't stomach it. I also got a large pepperoni for the family. It wasn't rotated in the oven or something because one half was completely charred. Black as the coal it was cooked with. I couldn't believe it would be sent out to a customer that way. When I transfer the picture from my phone Ill post it here. There was little pride taken in the handling and visual appearance of my order. Very sloppy neapolitan style pizza. I really don't see what all the fuss is about. The toppings were average as well as the cheese. Other places i've tried use similar product. The dough that I could eat did have nice chew and mouth feel although i'm not a big cornmeal fan. Over all it's not the best pizza in Michigan by any means. It also left me needing a 2 liter of water.

Great pizza!! A little pricey but worth it if you like thin crust pizza. Salad is good too. I have never had the buffet, only carry out and I have never been disappointed.

Three stars is A-OK and i feel that fits this restaurant well. Having the label of "One of the 25 best pies on Earth" hurt my experience. After driving with a group of friends for 45 minutes my expectations were high. The place itself is nothing amazing, and that does affect my rating. Its spacious and can easily seat 50. We were greeted by one of the cooks who told us to take a seat wherever we pleased. The menu is limited to 7 pizza choices so the array of flavors is very minute. We ordered the garlic bread, white, green, crab, and fresh mozzarella pizza. The experiences started off great. The garlic bread was fantastic. It was very light in texture but powerful on the flavor. To call a bread stick would be unfair since it resembles a crunch crust. Nonetheless it was delicious. Next came the pizza's. Now I've never had crab on a pizza, and I must say it was fairly tasty, but the acidity of the crab was not well neutralized with the sauce. It was very salty and the sauce used did not create an everlasting flavor. The White & Green Pizza were "meh" to say the least. It almost seemed as if there was a garlic orgy fest all over the pizza. Garlic was dripping everywhere. The Fresh Mozzarella was a great pizza and I highly recommend it. Something about it tasted right and traditional. The sauce was finally evident in this pizza and the mozzarella was not over powering. Everything worked well in this pizza. Overall the pizza's are decent. To say they are legendary would be ludicrous. The dough and crust of the pizza were terrific. Heck even the crust alone tasted great, however I just didn't taste much. On the menu the pizza's look simple with great ingredients; however when the pizza's came out the flavors seemed to be on their own instead of working effectively as a cohesive unite. I highly recommend you try "Belly Busters" Pizza.

Ahhh Tomatoes... We have such a love hate relationship. I hate the overwhelming garlic, and I hate the thin crusts, but for some reason I keep going back. Actually, once a year I go back, on Christmas night after family festivities. Between my in-laws home and ours lies Tomatoes Apizza, and it's kind of tradition now that we stop and get a small pizza every year. They're jewish in there so they're the only place open. The crust is so thin that I roll each rectangular shaped piece up into a type of pizza roll to eat it. The toppings are really fresh and the pepperoni is outstanding but I hate everything else about it. However, I love our tradition and it will continue despite my feelings on garlic and moist communion crisp type crust. Best pizza in metro Detroit? ummph..

By far the best pizza period. Go with the Red. Add tomatoes and basil. So good. My wife and I love it and have gotten other friends addicted as well. The pizza has been rated tops in metro Detroit and has even been listed as one of the best in the US in a recent article of GQ magazine. Its a thin crust so two can polish off a large with no problem. Enjoy!!!!

What can I say? I'm a connisseur of pizza :) This is worth the drive! I was worried at first - after reading all of the fine reviews and getting my hopes up.... when I walked in I thought.... "oh no - just some pizza joint with mediocre pizza...." However, I was pleasantly surprised! Near-perfect pizza!!!! You can't go wrong with anything on the menu.

Excellent classic pizza!!!!! The garlic bread was a little too garlicky, but that could just be the vampire in us. Garlic lovers will be in heaven. Thin old-fashioned pizza lovers will be beyond heaven! The small pizza was plenty for two of us to share. The place looks like a little take-out joint from the outside (be careful not to drive right by - it's next to Scores Pub), but inside it's spacious with lots of seating. We will be back, many many times. Keep it up, Tomatoes! I am also interested in trying their lunch buffet next time, as well as their other location.

tomatoes makes the best pizza in the state. it is brooklyn style pizza as good as it gets in michigan. the crust is thin, crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside. it is firm and substantial; it is not soft or floppy. the sauce has a great balance of ascetic and oregano. and unlike most pizza places in the metro area (i'm looking at you, paesano in royal oak), they don't put too much cheese. the mark of a great pizza place is whether they can get a plain cheese pizza right, and tomatoes' classic pizza (cheese, sauce, crust) is perfection. expanding from there, the red, white, and green pizzas are all great. this pizza is as good as any i've had nationwide, and better than a few famous places in NYC. even the salad bar at the buffet is accomplished, with fresh ingredients, great dressings, and wonderful homemade croutons. the only downside is that there is a particular waitress who is regularly annoying -- enough to change my order from eat in to take out. also, it's kind of a waste to go there for lunch on friday. they don't stage their pizzas well enough. if they fix their service issues, the review will be 5-star. i recommend this brick oven location over the coal oven location, even though the purists will say the coal oven is more authentic. the execution isn't better.

I guess if you've never left Farmington Hills then this pizza is ok. Honestly it was just standard pizza in my book. But there is an all you can eat lunch buffet to ensure your goal of a Michigan style waistline.

aaah-mazing pizza! thin crust, light sauce, fresh ingredients, totally addicting. my sis drove me all the way from b'ham to farmington hills to take me here and introduce me to her new pizza obsession. wood-burning oven pizza - thin crust - fresh ingredients - honestly, do you need anything else??

The pizza is New York Style thin crust that can be folded over if you feel so inclined. It is DELICIOUS, the crust is perfectly chewy and crisp; it has that great char of authenticity: YUM-O!! For me it is all about the crust and this place nails it. It is topped with a prefect amount of cheese and we tried the pepperoni. This is definitely in my tope five favorite pizzas. I only wish it was cheaper so I can have it often. But then it might not be as great--hmmmm Catch 22...

As it's been compared to Legendary Frank Pepe Pizza in New Haven, CT, I was skeptical to say the least to find any good Pizza in the motor city, as Pepe's is one of my two favorite pizza places, the other being Pizzeria Regina in the North End of Boston. Frankly in a blind taste test- I probably couldn't tell it from Pepe's- they even cut the pie the same and use similar trays. The only thing they don't have (I believe) is the clam pizza like Pepe's but doesn't matter to me b/c - that's my wife's preference..... This pizza is Awesome, been to both locations and even had them deliver a pie to my hotel. It's my go to place when I'm in MI.

Went here this past Friday, it had been a while and it was time. WOW, how do I not go here more often? It is really not that far away from home yet just like traveling to NYC. The pizza is damn near perfect, although you may want to let it sit a couple of minutes as I went crazy and burned the top of my mouth, but I did not mind and kept eating. So tasty. I know some folks have said it is a bit pricey but it is not Happys or Little Ceasars or Dominos, this is truly great thin nyc style pizza. Go if you get the chance.

The pizza is worthy of its national reputation. There is a cook (Joe?) who's been there for years. He knows his stuff. Tips: This is a storefront with no frills. This is just a place to go to order your pizza and eat it; and do eat it there, right out of the oven, as excellent pizza is intended. Taking home will diminish it. The pizza comes in two sizes: small and large. Only order the small! Every pizza oven can only produce one size optimally, and this oven optimally produces the size labeled small, which ably feeds two. If you need more, order multiple small, preferably in succession so that each arrives after the previous has been consumed. The beverages and salads are pure corporate junk food, so don't even consider them. There are no libations, but I think you can bring in beer & wine from a nearby package store. Warning: the "crab" is actually krab, which is to say faux crab, which no respectable person should eat, and this place should banish. Suggestions to mgt: replace the coordinate sodas and salad dressings, and the pale commercial salad greens, with offerings that deserve accompaniment with your magnificent pizza.

First off, I was raised in the east-coast (NYC) and fortunate to consume many world renowned pies growing up. After moving to the mid-west in my early 20's, it was series of disappointments when I was craving pizza. Then I found this place. One of the few places that brings back my joyful childhood memory of that perfect balance between crispy, chewy, cheesy goodness. If you prefer Detroit-style pizza, this is not the place for you. This is Napoli-style pizza, the only form of pizza found in the east-coast (NY/NJ/CT), thin, crispy yet chewy crust topped with minimal ingredients.

    (4)
  • Aurora H.

So...they have pizza, salad, and not a whole lot else. No beer or wine. Yes, there is garlic bread. But there are no pasta dishes to wow you. Nothing to distract you from their speciality....PIZZA. The pizza is damn good. Fresh ingredients, tasty sauces, and the waitress was a sweetie. We were the only people there (dining in) so I'm not sure how it is on a busy night. I'd come back. Naples pizza was really good! Four stars because...I mean, a beer would have topped everything off perfectly.

And on the third day, the god of all things tasty descended from the heavens and created Tomatoes Apizza. But seriously: this place is absolutely awesome! It is obvious that the owners take pride in their establishment and work hard to make what I would classify as the best pizza in town. You can taste the love in each saucy, perfectly cooked bite. Pros: If you like thin crust, this is the place for you. If you like genuine fresh ingredients, not factory-made dough like that of franchise pizza joints, this is a must-try. If you like an all-you can eat lunch buffet that includes drink, fresh salad bar, and great pizza... Come here any weekday from 11-2 (who wouldn't like that is the real question). It's $10.60, quite the bargain in my opinion for a heavy-eater like me. They constantly restock the buffet with all types of pizza, so it's always hot and fresh. The salad bar has the better quality lettuce that is a rarity at buffets. Pop from the machine is good... Plenty of carbonation. Cons: Only gripe I have is that they only have one waitress on duty to clear plates during buffet time. That's fine if the crowd is light, but when the place is packed dirty plates build-up and tables are not cleared fast enough to seat incoming guests. Beware coming to the buffet during the most crowded time (11:30-1:30)...It's best to catch an early or late lunch to avoid the crowd. All-you-can eat pizza brings out the worst in people, and the local office crowd that frequents the place gets real piggish real fast (I've been cut in line multiple times, also watched people "hoard" plates of pizza for fear of another one not coming out from the kitchen). That's an issue with any buffet I guess, but if you come when it's busy... Don't way I didn't warn ya! Bottom line: Freakin awesome!! This is a must-try for any pizza fan. 5/5

This is still one of the best pizza places around. I would actually say THE BEST for thin crust pizza. The pizza is not overwhelmed with sauce or cheese. The crust is cooked thoroughly in a brick oven just right. The salad bar is fresh. The only downside is that there is no beer, wine or liquor. The pizza is so good that you actually forget about it. It is definitely worth a visit or one or two or......

Yea, so um. AWESOME! - Cheese Bread: Perfect amount and blend of cheese melted into a thick blanket of awesome. No complaints! - Crab Pizza: Fake crab of course, but no complains the butter and garlic flavor of the crab pizza (no sauce) was delish. Great blend of white cheese melted with touch of butter and garlic. Lemon wedges on top was key. - Naples Sampler: Really loved the 'Green' (Spinach) pizza in the Naples sampler. I found the 'white' pizza to taste just like tomatoes as it was covered in it. A delicate and flavorful bite in its own right, but tomato is all I got. Fresh mozzarella was nice too, no complaints but not a favorite. For the classic portion of the Naples sample we did Bacon and Black Olive. Amazing black olives, and the bacon was not shriffled up and chewy leathy. Win!

This is a new review. We went back at the owners request for another try if you like thincrust, you'll like this. We got the sampler, which has four different flavors. Something for everybody. I like the fact. That there is plenty of garlic. But it's not overpowering. On one section you can select a single topping. We chow pepperoni since my friends don't like mushrooms. (So sad.) anyways, I'd go back. Enjoy. And hopefully this ends my Yelp review jinx.

This is one of the best, if not THE BEST thin crust pizza in town. We didn't realize that the large was ginormous and there was only two of us! (Left overs for the next five days!) we got the mozzarella pizza with pepperoni, bacon and veggies... Let's just say they weren't stingy in loading up the pizza! we also got the salad bar which was really good, with home made croutons that were to die for. We got an order of garlic bread, which was almost as big as the pizza and only $7. The bread was a little too garlicky for me, but over all delicious. The service was just as awesome as the food, the server and cooks were very welcoming and attentive. I definitely recommend this place for amazing Italian pizza.

I think I found my favorite pizza resturant. With some other pizza places you can't really taste the toppings because it so much bread but not with Tomatoes! The thin crust and the toppings are perfection. My mom now makes me get the pizza from Tomatoes only.

What can I say? This is the best pizza around. It's been our favorite for a long time now. My favorite is the crab pizza. Yes, I know it's imitation crab. Doesn't matter because it's THAT good. Hubby's favorite is fresh mozzarella with half peperoni. SO. GOOD.

Ordered: Naples Sampler (large) Price: $22 without tip/tax Ambiance: Really enjoyed this typical pizzeria with its abundance of brick and incandescent lighting. The dining area is quite large with generously spaced tables. There are rustic and artistic art on the ways reminiscing of old france and operatic musicals were playing in the background which my wife and I enjoyed. Food: I'm not normally a thin-crust fan but I enjoyed our pizza very much. The crust was thin but substantial (~1 cm) with a great balance of crispiness and chewiness, not like a dry saltine like some other places. They don't overdo the cornmeal on the bottom and the oven gives the edges a good amount of smokiness. The beauty of Tomatoes APizza, however, lies in the execution of their ingredients; they keep it simple and fresh. The tomato sauce is bright and savory with a hint of sweet and good dash of heat. It is not a thick paste but something you could actually imagine coming from real tomatoes. Likewise the vegetable toppings are real, you can see the chopped spinach that isn't from a frozen brick, the raw pieces of garlic that still have lots of kick, the slices of tomato, etc. The pepperonis are also thick and pack a solid punch of savoriness. While we enjoyed all the pizzas, our favorites were by far the classic with pepperoni and the "white" which is essentially a caprese over white sauce. Overall there isn't too much to complain about the pizzas as their beauty lies in their simplicity and freshness. You won't see crazy 10 topping pizzas or weird creations like bbq chicken or thai pizza, instead, you get to experience of the art of making a simple gourmet pizza. I would gladly come here again although I will admit the price is slightly steep, I may have to stop by during the buffet hours...

Tomatoes is a favourite for our family! The food is great, and dining in is a great experience. My young kids LOVE Sarah M. Every time we pull up, they want to look to make sure she is working. Luckily for us, she typically is working on a Friday evening! She is funny, entertaining, great with the family, and has built a relationship with customers like us that keeps us coming back.

While any decree of "Best Pizza Ever" is inane, Tomatoes does beg for a superlative. There are two locations; this is the original. The Farmington Hills location features a coal-fired oven, lending a different flavor to the crust. But the original is fantastic. The Red Pie is the classic, crispy crust, San Marzano tomato sauce, and pecorino Romano cheese. Delicious, and as far from Hot & Ready as you can imagine. The White Pie, Green Pie, and Crab Pie are all worthy alternatives, and great for a change of pace. The Classico Pie is a more traditional pizza, topped as you like. Regardless, all feature the same mild tomato sauce, and crunchy, charred crust. And that's the reason you'll keep coming back.

The pizza at Tomatoes is soooooo good, you guys. And the garlic bread? Amazing (disclaimer: only if you LOVE lots and lots of garlic, which I do). I won't reiterate what everyone else here is saying, so I'll add something else: Check out their lunch buffet Mondays-Fridays! It's decently priced, and you get unlimited drink refills, access to the salad bar, and the best part -- you get to try all the pizzas they put out there. (Or actually, maybe don't, because I want to still have a seat the next time I go.) ;) All kidding aside, this is hands down the best way to try more of their pies without having to splurge on an entire pizza. Want to try the krab pizza without committing to several slices? Try a singular piece! (And OH BOY, is it good and garlic-y!) Does spinach make you weary? Try a slice. I promise you won't be disappointed. I've never had a slice of pizza from Tomatoes that I didn't love. The crust is cracker-crisp and has the perfect amount of charry goodness. And don't skip the salad. It seems forgettable, but the quality of ingredients makes it simply worthwhile (plus, there's oodles and oodles of salami).

Great spot for lunch! The lunch buffet is the best way to affordably sample their excellent menu. This place is a fine tuned machine during lunch hours. The staff is friendly and keeps the salad and pizza bars stocked, even when it's busy. You'll have a hard time finding a better place for lunch in Farmington or anywhere for less than $10!

Heard all the hype about this pizza place and finally tried it. Everyone has their favorite pizza and this just wasn't mine. In fact I won't try it again. I found the crust to be very thin and the over all pizza just OK. I think customers are blinded by the low price lunch buffet and over look the sub-par pizza. I can't recommend this place, sorry.

We like their Pizza... thinish. The crab is unique as tasty with the liberal butter. The meaty Pizza was good too. in our family the adults vote for this pizza, and the kids will eat it, even the crab (though the kids still prefer Pizza Hut!!) They have done in, but we've never done that.

Love this place! I suggest going during lunch time when they have the lunch buffet and you can try all different pizzas. If you want something that is not out on the buffet table, they will make one for the buffet! The lunch buffet includes pizza, one of the best salad bars, and soft drink. Come hungry because you will want to try everything. I even tried their dessert pizza with nutella and it was delicious!!

There was a bit too much char on the pizza for my taste. It might have been a very good pizza other wise. The waitress said you need to ask for it lighter of you don't want the chat. The Naples Sampler was a good choice. Kudos for fresh romaine in the salad bar and a good vinaigrette.

Truly outstanding pizza! It's NY style meaning thinish crust charred slightly on the bottom and with just the right amount of bend when you pick up a slice and crease it at the round. It has wonderful flavor and texture The sauce stands out as well. Its simple and doesn't overpower as is often the case. The small is enough or 2 for sure and the salad bar was nice too. Service: spectacular. Highly recommend.

I have to say hands down my favorite food is pizza. My wife and I eat pizza once or twice a week. I always tell my wife I wouldn't be able to choose between her or my pizza. Tomatoes could be a tie breaker lol "sorry Donna" It's like the feeling of driving to a first dates house; I'm that nervous "butterfly's lol". All the ingredients are fresh on the pizza; from the basil to the raw strips of bacon. I still love my large with red sauce, garlic, mozzarella and with pepperoni, sausage and mushroom... They use brick ovens, fired by coal. They also make a great Caesar salad with house made croutons. So till I find a better pizza this is my 5 star champ. Sorry Supinos maybe if you weren't so fare away.. Keep an eye out; the Detroit metro area has alot of great pizza joints.. Try them out

I have lived in Farmington Hills for roughly 35 of the 42 years I have been on this planet and ironically, it took my cousin coming in from Forida to discover Tomatoes Apizza, which is literally less than 2 miles from my house. He stayed at the Holiday Inn right down the road from Tomatoes and wound up ordering one during his stay. Anyways, he loved it and recommended that I try it. A month or so later, I was driving by and decided to stop in and finally try it out. I was absolutely blown away. It was without question one of the best pizza's I have ever had and I have tried a LOT of different Pizzerias. I'm an architectural photographer and travel extensively for my job. Over the last 15 years, I have visited almost every major city in the US. Those best pizza in the US lists that many food magazines come out with, I can go down most of them and check each one off one by one. I have tried many of the best pizzaria's in the US. Not to mention, I spent 4 weeks shooting pictures in Florence and Rome as part of my senior thesis so I was able to try some of the really great authentic itialian pizzaria's as well. Tomatoes can stand toe to toe with any of them! While I do enjoy a good deep dish pizza, my true love, at least when it comes to pizza, is without question the thinner style pizza like New York style pizza or true Italian style pizza. Basically, a pizza that is thin and light on sauce. Tomatoes is exactly the style pizza I enjoy the most. Again, I was absolutely blown away with the quality of their pizza. That was almost 2 years ago. Since that time, getting a Tomatoes pizza has become a weekly event in my household. I myself prefer the Classic, which is just their plain cheese pizza, but my wife prefers the classic with sausage put on it. Sausage is not a topping I usually prefer on pizza, but Tomatoes has the single best sausage I have ever had when it comes to pizza toppings. So we usually wind up getting a large Classic with sausage on half and I usually wind up having a slice or two with the sausage. We have tried a few other styles, including the Red and getting various toppings on the classic. Thier pepperoni's are outstanding!! We enjoy Tomatoes so much that I would estimate that 90% of the pizza we have eaten the last 2 years has come from Tomatoes. We never get sick of it either. We both enjoy it as much today as weI did when we first tried it. I have to point out that I am absolutely shocked at a couple of the reviews in here. One pointed out that the people were unfreindly and the pizza was nothing special. Well, wether or not people like a particular food is as subjetive as subjective gets so if people don't like this pizza, then they don't like this pizza. They are entited to that opinion, but to say that the workers were unfriendly is nothing short of shocking. I have gotten to know the people very well that work at this location (there are actually 2 Tomatoes Apizza locations and I have only tried the one on Halsted in Farmington Hills), and they are some of the friendliest people I have ever known in a food establishment. I am a strong believer that people put out positive and negative energy and how people react to you is largely dependent on that energy. If the people at Tomatoes were unfriendly, which I have a VERY hard time believing, then I can guarantee it was becasue the people they were dealing with were unfriendly. Considering this particular reviewer didn't like the food, I am betting she wasn't very happy about it and thus wasn't particularly freindly. That is the only explaination that makes any sense and again, the people that work at this branch of Tomatoes are just super friendly people. I look forward to picking up our pizza's just to say hello to everyone. The bottom line - Its impossible to please everyone. Regardless of what food or establishment your talking about, there will always be people that walk away unsatsified. Its no different than movies. No matter how good a movie might be, there will always people that didn't like it. No film, in the history of Hollywood, has ever gotten a 100% feedback rating. Its simply not possible as people have different tastes and preferences. That said, if you enjoy a high quality pizza, especially a thinner styled pizza, and you haven't tried Tomatoes yet....well, pick up the phone or get in your car and get one asap! Trust me, you will thank me that you did. This pizzeria has won "best pizza in Detroit" honors multiple times and even won best pizzaria in Michigan with the Food Networks "50 States, 50 Pizzas". The reason is simple. They make an OUTSTANDING pizza. If you havent tried them yet, what are you waiting for?

The idea is a good one: Bring back the traditional Neapolitan thin crust pizza that is more like you'll find in Italy than the thick-crust , Sicilian pizza that dominates Southeast Michigan. Bake it in a real, coal fired oven, on bricks. The result should be a superior pizza. And it would be, if they'd bothered to use good ingredients, The crust has excellent texture, but it's bland, and flavorless, as is the sauce. There's no hint of garlic, or pepper, or any herbs whatsoever. The tomatoes are woody and underripe. What flavor you'll find in these pizzas is in the highly spiced pepperoni and sausage. The salads are similarly without flavor or character, as are the dressings. Their web page is full of excellent reviews, which leads me to wonder if perhaps they did start out using good toppings. I had great expectations for this place, and I still think they could easily produce a superior pizza if they just upped the quality of what they put on the pies. I'd sooner pay $12 for a really good pizza than $9 for a tasteless one.

Called this place to order a pizza one night, the guy answering the phone yelled "What?" I hung up immediately and actually made my own pizza.

Truly outstanding pizza and the fresh bread. Closest to the original Italian pizza with the perfect thin crust. I love this place. They always use fresh vegetables which makes the pizza simply yummy.

I have been going to this place ever since it opened. Originally from the East Coast, I love thin crust pizza, and Tomatoes used to be the one to beat. Sadly, for some time now they have been wildly inconsistent. Sometimes they are fantastic. But I also have gotten burnt pizza, pizza without much cheese, pizza where the cheese was all in the center (leaving a 3" sauce-only strip around the perimeter), and pizza with lots of burnt cornmeal on the bottom, to mention a few. They need to get back to basics and start putting out a consistent, high quality product. Get Mike W. back to show how it's done!

Favorite pizza place in Michigan. We go here to treat ourselves. I only wish there was a restaurant closer by, we'd be here every week! Pizzas are thin crust and perfectly flavored! We always get the Naples Sampler and the Garlic Bread. Can't go wrong.

Pizza made with the best ingredients, in a handmade, authentic way. No robot pizzas. Thin crust done by experts. Play to their strengths and you will not be disappointed: 1) Monday-Friday at lunch time - no brainer. Get the lunch buffet. About $10 for all you can eat pizza salad and soda. 2) Off hours or evenings: Order a pizza made for you. The buffet works perfectly at lunch. The place is always busy. Pizza is always hot, and there is always a huge variety of toppings on the different pizzas. New pizzas keep coming out of the oven continuously to keep up with demand. If you are the only one there, don't order the buffet. For obvious reasons you won't enjoy that. If you have a chance, do the buffet at lunch for your first visit. You'll see and try things that you wouldn't normally order, and take a chance on something new. Then when you come back some evening, you will know what you liked before ordering a full pizza. I go with a couple of guys that love their crab pizza. At lunch, one guy tries to sit where he has clear view of the buffet so he can see a fresh crab pizza delivered. In the evening they seem to do a lot of carryout business.

Love the lunch buffet here, great price for a selection of awesome pizzas and good salad bar. Bonus they've got Nutella filled dessert pieces, SO GOOD. Friendly staff and close to work, go to place for me!

Absolutely fantastic pizza. We dined in and ended up talking to the owner, who was very friendly, and she explained their process of using a stone oven which really provided a great taste. Their pizzas are also HUGE! A small was easily split amongst 4 adults. We will most definitely be back!

The place is not too appealing on the outside and we were a bit hesitant to walk in after we had arrived - but because the reviews are outstanding, my sister and I decided to try it out. The salad bar was empty - I find it important to point out that I believe the salad bar (and pizza bar) is only available during lunch. Despite a few minor drawbacks, the pizza had wonderful flavor and we were very happy we walked in. The pizza came out pretty quick and the waitress was friendly. From the loaded toppings to the delicious sauce, i'd recommend to anyone who enjoys a good thin crust pizza.

Solid.... Being from New York it reminds me of home.... Good sauce and thin crispy crust. You can tell that the ingredients are fresh and well chosen real fresh mushrooms not canned etc...

Great overall food and customer service. The pizza was amazing. The guy that took my order asked if I had ever been there before and I said no. He made me the Naples Sampler, cheese bread and the chocolate desert. It was incredible and he made sure that I was happy so I would come back. I will be back!

This is the closest to real Italian pizza that i have ever had. The toppings were fresh and their crust was perfectly thin and a little charred, just like in Italy. We got the Naples sampler so that we could try all types. A large is enough to feed 3-4 people. We will be back!

On the plus side: Delicious brick oven crust; sauce has a fresh tomato taste, high-quality cheese On the minus side: Indifferent service, spartan surroundings. Bottom line: Glad I visited, but I wish the buffet had been open.

We tried out the lunch buffet this past Friday. $8 + tip for AYCE pizza, salad, bread and pasta, plus you get a soda! Crazy packed - we had to wait for a table to be cleared. I chatted with a fellow customer at the salad bar, and he said it was busier than usual, even for a Friday. The pizzas kept coming and coming! There's a large window/hole in the wall between the dining area and pizza oven where the staff can slide pizzas through and holler out the more choice ones. My first time trying the crab pizza, and I liked. First one came out with shredded crab stick and cheese (no red sauce). The second had chunks of crab stick, mushrooms, red sauce and cheese. I wouldn't order a whole crab pie, but a couple pieces gave me my fix. Pepperoni is the star meat - thick, chewy slices, so much flavor. So many pies to chose from - veggie only, supreme, plain cheese, pepp only, cheese and basil, and finally spinach with a kick of fresh garlic. They just kept coming! Very fresh and large selection at the salad bar. Pasta tray sat empty the whole time we were there, and they refilled at the very end. I didn't try it but it looked like maybe garlic oil or creamy (definitely not red sauce). Excellent lunch deal!! Staff did a perfect job of clearing tables, keeping the salad bar and pizza trays stocked, and disposing of 'older' pizza slices. I even heard them asking people for special requests.

I was definitely left with more to be desired. I went on a Saturday night, and the place was empty. My cousin and I had never been and were looking over the menu, the server was very rude and seem agitated that we wanted some suggestions. We ended up getting the salad bar and the sampler. First off, how in the world is a salad bar of browning lettuce and obnoxiously burnt "croutons" $4? Secondly, the pizza left me underwhelmed. I liked the "green" pizza but not so much that I would ever go back to get it. I was super excited to try this place too. Hour Detroit had it as one of the best pizza places in metro Detroit and I've heard a few people rave about it. But I would definitely not recommend it to anyone unless they want to spend $35 on a mostly unappetizing pizza and brown lettuce.

YUM. Best Chocolate (Nutella) Piadina EVER!! Love their pepperoni too. The pizza has a thin crust which I like. The only thing is the garlic cheese bread was way too greasy.... And they cut their pizza in weird shapes. Which for the size of the pizza I guess is understandable. Still, pretty good I'd say!

I love this place and go for the lunch buffet. This crust pizza with huge variety. The salad bar has fresh green lettuce and fixings. The service is always friendly. The music is always good and eclectic. It can be a super quick lunch too if you are pressed for time. I also get carry out salad and pizza too. Enjoy!

I only manage to get here once or twice a year. The remainder of the year, I just dream about the next time I go. I'm glad most reviews are positive. But the negative ones really throw me. For example, this place uses ingredients that are shockingly wonderful. The bacon is actual half-strips of real bacon - from an actual pig! The pepperoni is spicy. I've got such bland pepperoni from other places for so many years, I forgot what spicy was like. I don't really stare at a slice of pizza when I eat one, but every time I encounter a bite with a mushroom here, it "pops" and my brain does a Homer Simpson drool as it echoes, "ummmm mushrooooom..." And the staff? Look. I'm an old man. And I'm cheap. And yes, sometimes I go to a place and I feel like the service is ho hum, and the tip feels like an obligation, because the person did nothing to make me feel like I owe them. But, these people have made me feel welcome every time. I want to tip. I actually want to tip big. And sometimes I have the need (and act on it) to ask to talk to the cook so as to thank and compliment her. At a pizza place! When's the last time you got a pizza so good that you felt the need to personally thank them? Ok. So nothing's perfect. I feel that their pizzas are pretty high priced. 9$ gets you a small with no toppings. I guess one could argue that you get what you pay for, and my mental price point is set by all the bad pizza chains out there. But, for me, the wonder of this place is the all-you-can-eat buffet. That buffet is gold. For the same 9$, you can try tiny slices of dozens of different and amazing flavor combos. I've been to buffets where one pizza comes out every 15 minutes and its gone in 20 seconds, so if you're not in line pushing, you don't eat. But here, at any given moment there's 10-15 pizzas to try. Now, be smart. Don't hit the buffet at an off hour when nobody else is there (Like eating lunch at 2pm on a week day). For 9$ you can't expect them to personally make 10 pizzas for you. You're pretty selfish if that's your expectation. Hit them while the crowd is reasonable, and it'll be the finest lunch this year. EDIT: Upon reflection, I guess I can understand a negative review. Over the years, I've eaten there about 20 times. I'd say 19 of those were a 5-star experience. One time, I went during an off-hour. I was the only person there. So the buffet was a bit "stale." That was a 2-star experience. Of course, my other 19 visits show me that that was an anomaly. So, I can ignore it. But, of course, if someone else had that rare experience on their first visit, they'd come here, give a 2-star review, then never go back. I can only say, it really is the finest pizza place I've ever been to, so if you give it a try there's a 95% chance you'll not be disappointed.

my office use to be right across the street and Tomatoes became this our favorite spot for lunch, from the seafood pizza to the basic red sauce, they have the best thin crust around town! Yum Yum!

I was in the mood for great pizza and my everything took me to this place. I saw they had lot's of awards on the walls and my expectations started getting pretty high. I went with the recommendation of my everything and we ordered the white pizza and a classic with sausage, spinach and other good stuff. The crust was awesome! Good flavor and nice and thin. I ended up eating WAY more than I should have but it's just so hard to stop! I'm definitely going to be coming back here often!

It's odd that both times I have been there is nobody, and I mean, nobody there. They must do a good carry-out business. Last night when we arrived (party of 4) the waitress said that they have a salad bar. My hubby went to look at it and reported that most of the topping containers were empty. They scurried about to fill them up as all of us ordered a salad. Still it was pretty strange, almost like they weren't expecting people to come in. We ended up going with the pizza that gave you a sample of 4 of their "specialties". One had spinach and garlic on it....sounds like heaven to me. Only it was loaded with TONS of frozen or canned - def not fresh - spinach. All in all, I don't think I would go back. It wasn't terrible....it just wasn't great. Kind of a let down.

This place is crazy expensive but the pizza was pretty legit. The Naples Sampler was a good idea to get a sense of the options but with thin crust pie and not a ton of toppings, $24 is a little exorbitant in my humble opinion. I would've really liked to have seen some fresh mozzarella on the margherita portion. But again the pizza was pretty good and the little char on the crust was nice. I would definitely suggest the buffet in regard to bang for your buck though, if you have the option. For the pizza alone I'd rate 4+ stars easily but with the cost of the take-out pie it drops it a star.

Again a fruitful lunch trip to tomatoes. Today they had a seafood option (not a fav of mine but heard it was good) and an option with my FAVORITE toppings ever: sausage and black olives. The pies are definitely better when fresh but with the nice thin 'n crispy crust it doesn't loose its tasty appeal after its waited a couple minutes for you to make your way down the pile of slices you picked up.
